Field Research Experience

Recovered tags from our Piedras Blancas seal! Each year the Beltran lab tracks seals on their post-breeding and post-molting migrations using biologgers.
  • Raimondi-Carr Lab, PISCO | 2023

Heading out for a long day of diving! As a PISCO technician I conducted over 50 dives within five months to contribute to a long-term study designed to understand the California Current’s marine ecosystem and how it may be changing over time.

An urchin with black spot disease. I helped Dr. Nikka Malakooti conduct surveys to quantify the abundance of diseased urchins to understand disease spread within the reef.
  • US Geological Survey (USGS) | 2023

In June, I spent five days on a dive boat to conduct algae, invertebrate, and urchin surveys at San Nicolas Island!

Science Communication

To improve accessibility and engagement with the Beltran Lab’s ongoing research I create plain language summaries of research articles for Año Nuevo docents. So far I have covered these papers:

  2. Payne, Czapanskiy, Kilpatrick, Robinson, Munro, Ong, Bastidas, Negrete, Theders, Stillwell, Coffey, Schweitzer, Baugh, Salazar, Chau-Pech, Rodrigues, Chavez, Wright, Rivas, Reiter, Costa, Beltran.
